๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Establish task zones and responsibilities
Divide the room down the middle or assign distinct tasks such as floors versus surfaces. Set a visual timer on a desk or dresser where both participants can monitor progress.
- โข Timer running on a clear dresser surface
- โข Two separate work zones visibly designated
- โข Failing to agree on assignments before starting work
Clear trash and recyclables
Carry a heavy-duty trash bag through the room and collect all food wrappers, empty containers, and loose paper. Check under beds, behind desks, and along nightstand corners.
- โข Trash bag tied off near the door
- โข Floor under the bed visible and free of loose debris
- โข Leaving discarded beverage cups on desks or nightstands
Sort and bin all clothing
Place two hampers in the center of the room: one for dirty laundry and one for clean clothes to fold. Pick up every garment from the floor, chairs, and bed, sorting each item into the appropriate hamper.
- โข Floors completely clear of fabric and clothing
- โข Both hampers filled and positioned near the wardrobe
- โข Throwing clean clothes back onto unmade beds instead of into bins
Wipe and sanitize elevated surfaces
Spray multi-surface cleaner onto a microfiber cloth rather than directly onto furniture. Wipe down desks, dressers, and bedside tables working from top surfaces down to drawer handles.
- โข Desk surfaces reflective with no dust streaks or water rings
- โข All miscellaneous tabletop items aligned or organized in trays
- โข Spraying liquids directly onto computer keyboards or power outlets
Strip, remake, and dress the beds
Pull the bottom sheet taut and tuck the corners under the mattress using hospital corners if possible. Fluff pillows and align the duvet evenly across the mattress edges.
- โข Bedspread pulled flat with no visible wrinkles or sagging edges
- โข Pillows upright and aligned against the headboard
- โข Leaving sheets bunched or untucked at the foot of the bed
Vacuum and sweep the floor
Sweep hard corners and baseboards toward the center of the room with a broom. Vacuum the open floor in overlapping straight passes, working backward from the farthest corner toward the doorway.
- โข Even vacuum tracks visible on carpet or shiny unobstructed hard floor
- โข Baseboards free of dust bunnies
- โข Vacuuming over large items like coins or socks that can jam the roller
