๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Declutter and Sort Loose Items
Walk through each room with a sorting basket to collect stray items off floors, beds, and tables. Put dirty clothes into the laundry hamper, throw wrappers and scraps into the trash, and return toys and books to their designated shelves or bins. Clearing open surfaces first makes all subsequent dusting and cleaning much faster.
- โข Floor space and tabletops are clear of loose clutter
- โข Dirty laundry is gathered in the hamper
- โข Trying to wipe around clutter instead of putting items away first
- โข Shoving items under beds or into closets without organizing
Dust High Surfaces Down to Low
Work around the room starting at the highest points, such as ceiling fan blades, high shelves, and door frames, using an extendable duster. Move down to lower surfaces like television stands, window sills, and baseboards so falling dust settles where it will be swept later. Wipe flat furniture tops with a slightly damp microfiber cloth to trap fine particles.
- โข No visible grey lint on shelf edges or fan blades
- โข Flat wooden and glass surfaces look clear under room light
- โข Dusting the floor first, which gets dirty again when dust falls from above
- โข Using a dry rag that flings dust into the air rather than trapping it
Wipe Down Tables and High-Touch Points
Spray a small amount of mild all-purpose cleaner directly onto a folded microfiber cloth rather than soaking the furniture. Wipe down dining tables, kitchen countertops, coffee tables, doorknobs, and light switches in smooth, overlapping strokes. Flip the cloth to a clean, dry side to buff away any remaining streaks or moisture.
- โข Sticky spots and smudges are completely removed
- โข Surfaces dry with a streak-free, clean finish
- โข Oversaturating wooden surfaces with liquid spray
- โข Forgetting frequently handled areas like door handles and light switches
Make Beds and Straighten Cushions
Pull the bottom fitted sheet tight, then draw the top sheet and blanket up toward the headboard and smooth out all wrinkles with your hands. Fluff each sleeping pillow and place them neatly at the top of the mattress, finishing with any accent pillows. Head to the living room to straighten couch cushions and fold throw blankets over chair arms.
- โข Bedspreads lie flat without bunched-up blankets
- โข Sofa cushions are fluffed and throw blankets are folded
- โข Tucking sheets unevenly so they pull off during the night
- โข Leaving crumpled blankets in heaps on chairs
Sweep and Vacuum Floors
Sweep hard floors using a broom, pushing debris from the edges toward the center of the room before sweeping it into a dustpan. Next, plug in the vacuum and roll it across rugs and carpeted areas using slow, overlapping passes to lift embedded dirt. Be sure to guide the vacuum head under furniture edges where pet hair and crumbs gather.
- โข Carpets show neat vacuum tracks with no visible debris
- โข Corners and floor edges are free of crumb piles and dust bunnies
- โข Moving the vacuum too quickly across carpets to pull up deep dirt
- โข Vacuuming over large coins or hard plastic pieces that could jam the roller
Mop Hard Floors and Empty Bins
Dampen your mop in warm water mixed with floor cleaner, wringing it out thoroughly so it is damp rather than soaking wet. Mop hard floors starting at the far corner of the room and backing yourself toward the doorway so you do not step on the wet surface. Finish by emptying all small bedroom and bathroom trash cans into a main trash bag, tying it securely, and taking it out.
- โข Hard floors display a uniform, clean sheen as they air dry
- โข All wastebaskets in the house are empty and fitted with fresh liners
- โข Mopping yourself into a corner with no dry exit route
- โข Using excessive water on hardwood floors, which can warp wood boards
