๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Glass carafe (standard machine carafe)
- โ Microfiber cloth
- โ Soft non-abrasive sponge
- โ Measuring cup
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ White distilled vinegar
- โ Fresh tap or filtered water
- โ Mild dish soap
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Never submerge the main coffeemaker electrical housing or power cord in water.
- โข Allow the warming plate and hot water reservoir to cool down before handling or wiping.
- โข Beware of hot steam emitting from the top lid vents during the descaling and flush cycles.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Remove Filter and Empty Reservoir
Lift the reservoir lid and pull out the charcoal water filter holder and any used paper or permanent gold-tone coffee filters. Discard coffee grounds and set the charcoal water filter cartridge aside away from the vinegar. Ensure the water reservoir and carafe are completely empty.
- โข Filter basket is empty with no grounds or paper inside
- โข Charcoal filter assembly is removed from the reservoir water tank
- โข Leaving the charcoal water filter in the machine during descaling, which ruins the filter
Mix and Pour Descaling Solution
Combine 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 fresh water (or a 1:1 ratio for heavy calcium buildup) in your measuring cup or directly in the carafe. Pour the mixture directly into the coffeemaker water reservoir up to the maximum fill line (typically 10-12 cups). Place the empty carafe with its lid securely on the warming plate.
- โข Water window shows liquid filled to the MAX/10-12 cup mark
- โข Carafe is centered on the warming plate with the lid securely closed
- โข Overfilling past the maximum line, causing liquid to spill through the overflow slot at the back
Run the Clean Cycle
Press the 'Clean' button on models equipped with one, then press the 'Brew' or 'On/Off' button (the clean light will glow steadily). If your model lacks a dedicated Clean button, simply start a standard brew cycle, turn the machine off halfway through for 15 minutes to let the vinegar soak the internal boiler tubes, and then resume the cycle until empty.
- โข Clean indicator LED is illuminated or brew cycle is actively dripping vinegar solution into carafe
- โข Hot vinegar solution begins collecting in the glass carafe
- โข Pressing Clean without pressing the main Brew/Power button, leaving the cycle unstarted
Wash Removable Components
Once the cycle beeps complete, carefully pour out the hot vinegar from the carafe into the sink. Wash the carafe, carafe lid, and removable filter basket with warm water and mild dish soap using a soft sponge. Rinse all soap residue thoroughly and dry with a microfiber cloth.
- โข Carafe glass is crystal clear without coffee oil film or vinegar smell
- โข Filter basket is rinsed clean and sitting on a drying surface
- โข Using abrasive scouring pads that permanently scratch the carafe glass or plastic basket
Run Two Fresh Water Flush Cycles
Fill the glass carafe to maximum capacity with cold, fresh tap water and pour it into the water reservoir. Place the carafe and empty filter basket back in position and run a standard brew cycle. When finished, discard the water and repeat this full-pot brewing process a second time with fresh cold water to eliminate all vinegar traces.
- โข Clear fresh water dripping smoothly into the carafe during normal brew mode
- โข Steaming water in carafe smells completely neutral with zero vinegar scent after cycle 2
- โข Only running a single flush cycle, leaving subsequent coffee tasting slightly sour or acidic
Wipe Exterior and Reassemble
Unplug the coffeemaker. Dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and gently wipe down the warming plate, housing, showerhead nozzle, and control panel. Reinsert the filter basket and reinstall the charcoal water filter assembly inside the reservoir.
- โข Warming plate is clean and free of baked-on ring stains
- โข Machine exterior has a clean, streak-free shine
- โข Charcoal filter holder is clicked firmly back into its reservoir slot
- โข Wiping the warming plate while it is still plugged in and scorching hot
