How to Clean Air Conditioner Filters

📋 Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Turn Off Power and Stabilize Work Area
Shut down the air conditioner using the remote control. Turn off the wall isolator switch or breaker to eliminate all electrical hazards, then set your step ladder firmly underneath the indoor unit.

Open the Front Intake Grille
Grip the left and right lower indentations on the indoor unit's front panel. Gently lift the panel upward until it clicks into its open, locked upright position.

Unclip and Slide Out the Filters
Hold the center tab at the bottom of each filter screen. Push slightly upward to release the bottom retention clips, then pull downward and toward you to slide the filter out of its track.

- • Yanking downward without unhooking the bottom locking tabs first

Vacuum Loose Surface Dust
Place the filters on a flat, clean surface. Vacuum the outward-facing side using a soft brush attachment, moving in smooth, parallel strokes to lift off the heavy dust blanket.

- • Mesh squares are translucent rather than gray and clogged
- • Vacuuming the back side first, which pulls dust deeper into the fine mesh
- • Using a hard nozzle without a brush, which tears the delicate netting
Wash Filters with Lukewarm Water
Rinse the filters under a tap or showerhead with lukewarm water running from the clean back side toward the dirty front side. For oily or sticky buildup, apply a drop of mild dish soap and gently buff with a soft brush.

- • No yellow nicotine, grease residue, or soap suds remain on the mesh
- • Using scalding water which warps the structural plastic frame
- • Scrubbing aggressively with abrasive scouring pads
Air-Dry Filters Thoroughly
Gently tap the filter frames against a towel to shake off excess droplets. Stand them vertically against a wall or drying rack in a well-ventilated, shaded area until completely dry to the touch.

- • Towel pressed to mesh comes away completely dry
- • Placing wet filters under intense midday sun or using a hair dryer on high heat
- • Installing damp filters back into the AC, creating mold and mildew odors
Reinstall Filters and Close Panel
Slide each filter up into its designated guide tracks until the top edge seats firmly. Press down on the bottom tab until it clicks into the locking catch, then push the front panel down until both sides snap shut.
- • Filter screens sit perfectly flush inside their guides without bulging
- • Front grille is completely closed with even seams along both sides
- • Inserting filters upside-down or reversing left and right orientations
- • Slamming the front panel shut from one corner instead of pressing both sides
