๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Bike stand or stable wall support
- โ Drivetrain stiff-bristle brush
- โ Soft-bristle frame washing brush
- โ Low-pressure garden hose or bucket with sponge
- โ Microfiber drying cloths
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Bicycle-specific degreaser
- โ Bicycle wash cleaner or mild car wash soap
- โ Bicycle chain lubricant (dry or wet)
- โ Clean water
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Keep degreaser and wet lubricant completely away from disc brake rotors and brake pads to prevent brake failure.
- โข Do not use high-pressure power washers directly aimed at sealed bearings (bottom bracket, hubs, headset).
- โข Avoid pinching fingers between the chain and chainrings while backpedaling.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Prep and Secure the Bike
Mount the bicycle securely in a work stand by the seatpost, or lean it stably against a wall on a flat, washable surface. Shift the chain into the smallest rear cog and largest front chainring to maximize chain tension. Remove accessories like GPS units, lights, and saddle bags.
- โข Bike is stable with wheels free to spin
- โข Electronics and bags removed
- โข Chain is on the smallest rear sprocket
- โข Clamping a carbon frame tube directly instead of the seatpost
- โข Leaving bike computer on the handlebars during wash
Apply Degreaser to Drivetrain
Spray a generous amount of bike degreaser directly onto the chain, cassette, front derailleur cage, and chainrings while slowly backpedaling. Allow the degreaser to dwell for 3 to 5 minutes so it can penetrate and dissolve grime. Keep spray directed away from disc brake rotors and calipers.
- โข Black oily grime visibly liquefying and running off the chain
- โข Wet, foamy degreaser coating the entire cassette and chainrings
- โข Overspraying degreaser directly onto disc brake rotors
- โข Rinsing immediately without letting the degreaser soak
Scrub the Drivetrain
Use a stiff-bristle drivetrain brush to scrub the cassette teeth, jockey wheels, and chainrings. Wrap a chain-cleaning tool or firm brush around the chain links and backpedal 20 to 30 rotations to scrub internal rollers. Use a notched claw tool or rag edge to pull out gunk built up between cassette cogs.
- โข Raw metallic silver visible on chain links and cassette sprockets
- โข Jockey wheel pulleys free from thick grease collars
- โข Using the greasy drivetrain brush on the frame later
- โข Skipping the rear derailleur pulley wheels
Soap and Wash the Frame
Pre-rinse the frame with a gentle shower spray from the top down. Apply bicycle cleaner or soapy water using a soft-bristle brush or microfiber sponge, starting from the handlebars and saddle down to the wheels. Gently wipe the fork, main triangle, rims, and tires.
- โข Thick soap lather covering top tube, down tube, stays, and fork
- โข No remaining grit or dried mud clumps on frame paint
- โข Using abrasive sponges or dirty rags that scratch paint finish
- โข Using a high-pressure jet stream close to headset and bottom bracket bearings
Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the entire bike using a gentle, low-pressure shower setting on the hose or a clean bucket of water. Direct water from the top of the bike downward to wash away all soap and dissolved degreaser. Ensure all foaming cleaner is removed from under the bottom bracket, around brake calipers, and through the cassette.
- โข Water running completely clear off the entire frame and drivetrain
- โข Zero soap suds remaining in crevices or cable guides
- โข Using high-pressure power nozzle near bottom bracket, wheel bearings, or suspension seals
- โข Leaving soap residue to dry and leave water spots
Dry the Bike
Bounce the bike lightly on its tires to shake off standing water droplets. Use dedicated clean microfiber cloths to thoroughly dry the frame, fork, controls, and rims. Use a separate clean rag to dry the chain links thoroughly by gripping the chain and backpedaling.
- โข Frame surfaces and rims are streak-free and matte/gloss uniform
- โข Chain surface is dry to the touch without standing water drops
- โข Using the chain drying cloth on the clean frame or disc rotors
- โข Leaving water sitting in chain link pins where rust forms
Re-lubricate the Chain
Apply a single drop of bicycle chain lube to each individual roller on the inside run of the chain while slowly backpedaling. Spin the pedals for 10 to 15 full revolutions to allow lube to seep into the internal pins and bushings. Take a clean rag, lightly wrap it around the outer plates of the chain, and backpedal 5 turns to wipe off excess surface lube.
- โข Each chain roller has a visible drop of oil that settles into the joint
- โข Outer side plates of the chain are clean and dry, not wet or dripping
- โข Failing to wipe off excess lubricant from the outside of the chain
- โข Applying lube directly to cassette gears or derailleur pulleys
- โข Getting chain lube on the brake rotor or wheel rim

Don’t have everything?
- No Bicycle-specific degreaser? Concentrated citrus dish soap diluted in warm water
- No Drivetrain stiff-bristle brush? Old firm-bristle toothbrush or nylon dish scrubber
- No Bike stand? Leaning bike securely against a wall or resting saddle on a sturdy workbench edge
- No Bicycle wash cleaner? Mild pH-neutral car wash soap mixed with water in a spray bottle
